Cloudy water can ruin the ambiance of any relaxing hot tub dip. Spa water treatments can be an easy, simple process if done correctly and on schedule. Like any pool, the ratio of chemicals is important, as well as the alkalinity levels. Follow the guide below to increase the time spent in the hot tub relaxing, while minimizing the time spent on maintenance.
Alkalinity, pH and Hardness
Just like an above ground or in-ground pool, the water balance is essential in keeping the spa clear and healthy. Alkalinity, pH and calcium level or hardness, are all going to play a role in how clean and clear the spa’s water is. Use a test strip to determine the levels of these. Ideally, water should be tested every week or after periods of heavy use. After testing the water, add or reduce certain spa products and chemicals. For example, if pH is high, some sort of acid might need to be added.
Keep it Clean
Unfortunately, the warm water of hot tubs attracts the company of bacteria and viruses more than a swimming pool would. Sanitization is a very important aspect of maintaining a safe and healthy spa. The two most common anti-bacterial sanitizers are Bromine and Chlorine. However, exercise caution when adding these chemicals, too little or too much can have a negative effect on the spa experience. It is recommended to check the Chlorine/Bromine levels before AND after adding them.
Shocking
Shock treatments are essentially another step of sanitization. “Shocking” refers to the process of adding an oxidizer (sometimes chlorine) in order to destroy the stuff that chemical agents can’t get, such as oil, lotions and dead skin cells. Basically, shocking removes the food source of bacteria. It also helps to remove any residue left by sanitizing agents and chemicals. Again, try to balance the spa water once a week. It is also recommended to shock your hot tub after periods of heavy use (backyard parties) or after a rain storm.
Ozone Treatment
Some newer spas offer an addition called an “Ozonator.” Ozone treatment is another method of sanitization and offers many benefits when compared to traditional chemical methods. In addition, Ozone also helps oxidize soaps, lotion, oil, hair spray, sun block, cologne and whatever else finds its way into your hot tub. In most cases, chemicals and Ozone Systems work together to provide a perfect spa experience.
