Capacity.
How many people will be using your hot tub? Determining what size of hot tub to purchase can be a hard question to answer. It’s easy to envision hot tub parties with family and friends all partaking, but do you really need a 12-person hot tub?
Instead of thinking of the “most people” scenario, we recommend you consider who will be using your hot tub the majority of the time. If that’s just two people, perhaps you should consider a four to five-person hot tub. That way you have the size you need for the day-to-day with a bit more room to accommodate a few guests.
Keep in mind, the bigger the hot tub, the bigger the expenses.
Placement.
Do you have a dedicated space on a flat surface? If not, you’ll need to find, or create a flat surface (think poured concrete or deck) so the water stays level (and inside)!
Also, consider if you want shade or sun exposure, protection from the wind, and privacy from neighbors.
Electricity.
Do you have electricity routed to your desired location? If not, an electrician can help route the appropriate electrical connections from your house to run your hot tub.
Consider whether you want the wires buried or left above ground. The type of hot tub you purchase will also determine what type of installation you need.

Cost.
How much do you want to spend on your hot tub? Don’t be afraid to share your price point with your sales person. Open communication will help facilitate a pleasant buying experience and help your dealer steer you in the right direction according to your budget.
Consider the cost to heat your hot tub. How much you use it and the temperature you prefer can affect the overall usage cost.
What accessories do you want to purchase? You’ll want a cover and perhaps stairs to access your hot tub.
Finally, don’t forget maintenance costs — chemicals, filters, and your time are also things to keep in mind when thinking about overall hot tub ownership costs.
