HELP! I’ve got GREEN HAIR!

Why Does Hair Turn Green in the Pool?

If your hair is Blonde, you know what I am talking about.  Sooner or later that blonde hair starts to look a little green.  Our customers ask us all the time, why is this happening and what do we do?

green hair from pool - Zagers Blog

One of our Pool Professionals, Pam, shares why this happens:  “Often times, green hair is caused by copper in the pool.  Copper can get into your pool one of two ways.

First – Your water naturally has some copper in it,

Second – The copper heating element in your heater could be corroding and letting copper into the pool.”

Okay, what do you do now?

If you’re near one of our three locations, bring in a water sample and we’ll test it for FREE! We’ll let you know what the copper content is in your pool and show you what you need to fix it.

If you can’t make it in, with every order of  Pool Magnet Plus we’ll send out two complimentary test strips for copper. Pool Magnet Plus from Bioguard can be used with Chlorine or Bromine pools.  Here are a few ways to use it:

1. Prevention:

  • 1 quart of Pool Magnet Plus per 10,000 gallons
  • Add directly to the pool in area of visible and localized metal stains
  • Maximum recommended dose is 3 quarts per 10,000 gallons

2. Maintenance:

  • When water being added to pool contains metals, add 3 fluid ounces per 1,000 gallons of water added to the pool

3. Removal of Fresh Stains

  • Turn circulation off for 8 hours
  • Pour 1 – 3 quarts of Pool Magnet® Plus directly in the area of the stain
  • Do not swim or operate pump for 24 hours
  • After waiting period, turn the pump on, circulate water continususly for 5 to 7 days and brush pool daily.

Once you are able to determine where the copper is coming from, the water or the heater, then you’ll know how it may come back.  If it’s from the water, then you’ll need to treat the water every time you add fresh water.  If the copper was put there from the heater, then you’ll need a service technician to replace the corroded heating element or disconnect the heater.
