Aquatic Exercise: Forget the Gym – Look To The Pool

Aquatic exercise has become an effective, low impact, enjoyable way to get your daily exercise in. With the heat of the summer in full-tilt, running on black top might not be the most comfortable workout. Pools offer a great way to stay in shape and avoid the harsh sun for your summer fitness regime. Below are a few reasons why aquatic exercise can be beneficial to any pool user.

Low Impact

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, aquatic exercise is low impact. Low impact basically means that unlike running, there isn’t any surface to impact. The water friction helps protect your joints from stress and strain. Swimming is a great exercise for those who struggle with back pain, physical limitations or arthritis. Water buoyancy reduces the amount of weight your body has to carry by 30%. Pools essentially provide a “soft” workout environment. The pain associated with falling or knee and joint pain is virtually eliminated.

Calorie Burner

Anywhere between 400 and 600 calories can be burned by one hour of swimming. The more intense swimming will burn closer to 600 calories, while casual swimming burn around 400 calories. This is due to the fact that water is 800 times denser than air. Keep in mind that hydrating is essential while exercising in the pool. Most people do not realize they are sweating in a pool because they are wet. So on hot days, make sure you hydrate just as much as you would if you were exercising outside of the pool.

Improves Mental Health

Swimming not only helps with physical health, but mental health as well. Exercise as a whole can improve your mood, reduce stress and decrease feelings of depression and anxiety. Swimming is also a great way to spend time with family. Playing games in the pool is a good way get exercise while having fun at the same time.

With aquatic workouts, improving physical health and pool enjoyment are combined into one place – making aquatic exercise more enjoyable than traditional methods. It also gives you the ability to add a little variety to your weekly workout.
