CHLORINE SANITIZER
One of the most basic ingredients for a healthy pool is the naturally-occurring element chlorine. You might remember it as good old Atomic Number 17 from chemistry class. In addition to killing bacteria and other germs, chlorine also kills algae, spores, and small insects so your pool remains safe and refreshing.
How does chlorine work in pools and spas? Chlorine reacts with the water to create hypochlorous acid (don’t worry – it’s a weak acid). Ideally your pool will have a chlorine level of 1-3ppm (parts per million) which is completely safe for humans, but uninhabitable for gunk and germs because it destructures their cell walls and DNA which prevents them reproducing.
Doesn’t chlorine smell and hurt your eyes? Nope. If your pool is properly chlorinated, you won’t smell it and it won’t irritate your eyes. In fact, those can be signs that a pool doesn’t have enough free available chlorine or “FAC.”
