Everything You Need to Know About a DE Pool Filter

There are a few different options for filters in the pool and hot tub world. This post will give you a brief over view of the three filtration systems, and elaborate on the DE Filter System, which is one of the most efficient pool filters on the market.
- Sand Filters are one of the oldest and most popular forms of pool filtration. They remove impurities from the water using sand to attract and gather the debris. Sand filters must be backwashed on a bi-weekly basis. Sand filters catch debris as small as 20 to 40 microns. Sand filters are one the most popular options as they are simple, effective and require very little upkeep and maintenance.
- Cartridge Filters are a great choice if you want something with very little maintenance and easy cleaning. They have a greater surface area than sand which means they clog less and are easier to maintain (only need to be cleaned one or two times per season).
- DE Filters are one of the more popular choices as they boast the most cleaning power. They are able to trap debris as small as 2-5 microns. Before we go into the interworking and advantages of a DE filter, what does DE stand for?
DE stands for ‘Diatomaceous Earth’. Diatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms – basically, super small, fossilized, skeletal remains of organisms. In other words, D.E. is ground coral.
Advantages of a DE Filter System
- Clarity. As mentioned above, they remove/trap debris as small as 2 microns. These are particles that aren’t visible to the human eye.
- Larger filter area capability = less backwashing.
- Vastly reduced bacteria. When a DE filter traps debris, it removes the organic material that bacteria feeds on – eliminating their food source.
- They offer the highest quality filtration of any pool filter on the market.
Disadvantages of a DE Filter System
- One of the more expensive filter options compared to others mentioned.
- More upkeep than a sand or a cartridge filter system. More DE powder will be needed after each backwashing, which occurs more frequently than sand filters.
- DE Filters also require disassembly once or twice per year, to clean the filter grids and tubes.
The bottom line is that DE filters provide the best overall performance but the costs and maintenance needs to be taken into consideration.
