Hot tub water needs to be changed every 3 – 4 months. Bacteria and viruses love to thrive in a poorly maintained spa. Knowing when and how to change the spa water will increase the longevity and operation of the hot tub. Improperly balanced water is the number one cause of equipment failure in hot tubs. It is very important to make sure the water is properly balanced every week. This article will provide direction and advice on how to know it is time to change the water.

One of the biggest signs of troubled water is cloudiness. There are several factors that affect the cloudiness of the spa. Review the items below to ensure that all other maintenance steps are routinely done before draining the water. This will help eliminate possible causes of cloudy water.

  1. Water Balance
Water balance is one of the first things that should be checked whenever there is an issue with the spa. Use test strips from your local Zagers Pool & Spa supply store and check the pH levels. Generally speaking, when the pH levels are above 7.8, it reduces the effect of sanitizing agents. When this happens, the chlorine or bromine are less effective at killing algae, therefore the water becomes cloudier. Keep in mind that the amount of use a spa goes through on a weekly basis will change the water balance. After a pool party or family reunion, it is a good idea to “shock” the spa, and adjust chemicals accordingly after testing the water.
  2. Keep the Filter Clean
It is a good idea to clean the filter ever month or so. It is also recommended that you have two sets of filters. Once you clean one, substitute the new one in and continue to rotate them every month. This guarantees that the filters are not to blame for the cloudiness. Along with regular filter cleaning, it is important to keep all other ongoing spa maintenance activities to a schedule. This helps prevent any lapses in cleaning, leading to more time enjoyed in the spa.
  3. Shock the Spa
As mentioned above, after periods of heavy use, it is a good idea to shock the hot tub to kill any additional bacteria or algae. Water balance can even be affected after a rain storm. Shocking is a good way to clear water fast – as long as it’s done properly.
  4. Finally, When to Change the Water?
A general rule of thumb to follow is if you are using the spa two or more times per week, the water should be changed every four months. So, if the steps above are followed and the spa water is still cloudy, it is probably time to drain and change the water.
