Hot tubs also require weekly upkeep, just like swimming pools. Overall, routine spa maintenance only takes a few minutes every week. Hot tubs have both interior and exterior components that need to be cleaned. There are 3 important steps to maintaining and increasing the longevity of any hot tub. The three steps are: water balance, sanitization and filter/cover cleaning. Performing regular hot tub maintenance will keep your spa water clear and clean all season long – allowing it to be a source of relaxation and fun for years to come.

1. Water Balance

Very similar to the chemistry of a swimming pool, hot tubs require the alkalinity, pH and calcium (hardness) to be measured on a weekly basis. Most water – especially “city” water has a chemical properties designed for use in household water systems.  Basically, it’s made for the copper pipes and fitting found in homes.  In order to make this water “spa” ready, a few small adjustments need to be made. Testing these levels can be done by using “test strips” which are available at most local pool supply stores. On the strips, it will have a “meter” that will show the levels of each measurement. Your local Zagers pool & spa supply store will also be able to provide the assistance and products should your chemical levels not be in the desired range.

2. Sanitization

The most vital part of spa maintenance is sanitization. There are several different agents that work, such as: chlorine, bromine or biguanide. All of these kill bacteria and viruses, which can be found in any pool or spa. Chlorine is the most popular option – keep in mind that the chlorine used in swimming pools is formulated differently. So, choose the right chlorine when making a trip to the store. Again, the proper use of sanitization in your hot tub is the most important step in having healthy pool chemistry.

3. Filter Cleaning

The filters main job is to remove the particulates out of the water. Cleaning your filter on a monthly basis is necessary to increase the hot tub’s life. The filter should be replaced if it cracked, frayed or still dirty after cleaning. Filters are different depending on the manufacturer. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for directions on how to remove the filter properly. The filter can be cleaned by rinsing it with a garden hose and removing any leftover debris (pine needles, leaves etc). Overnight cleaning solutions are also available. In short, rinse the filter every couple weeks and try to soak it in a cleaning solution every few months.
