Like any addition to a home, hot tubs also have minor hiccups from time to time. Whether the water is a bit cloudier than usual or the spa cover is fading and cracking, this list will help diagnose those problems and provide solutions to fixing them. Most all of the items on this list are minor in nature, and wouldn’t take more than a few quick steps to remedy.

The Water is Cloudy

A common occurrence for pool and hot tub owners’ alike, cloudy water could be traced to any number of causes. The most common cause is unbalanced water. To fix this, simply test the water and adjust accordingly. Water test stripes should be available at any local pool supply store. Of course, cloudy water could also be due to excessive contaminates. If this is the problem, the simple solution is to shock it, just like in a swimming pool. Keep in mind, DO NOT use pool shock for hot tubs and spas.

Too Much Foam in the Water

Most of this time, this is due to an excess amount of contaminant or soap residues. To fix this, use a de-foamer and “scum-digester. De-foamers help break down and inhibit foam from forming.  If adding chemicals to eliminate the foam doesn’t sound appealing to you, there are alternative solutions that can be used to get rid of unwanted foam.

Stain or Scale on Spa Surfaces

Sometimes, the shell, cover or another component of the hot tub will show stains or scale spots. Don’t worry, this is any easy fix. In most cases, it is due to the mineral content in the water and will happen faster and more frequently if you are using well water to operate the hot tub (which most people do). For stain and scale removal, simply use a non-abrasive stain remover will a nonabrasive rag. It is important to use nonabrasive materials to avoid damage to the shell and cover.  To prevent staining, water purifier attachments are available.

Discolored or Changing Color Water

While this is not as common of a problem as the other ones listed above, it does happen. There are a few different causes:

  • Mineral content
  • Eroding metal equipment
  • Low pH
  • Low hardness level

For excessive mineral content, try adding a stain and scale control agent.  You can also try using a water filter that will sift out any excess mineral content.  For low pH and hardness problems, use a water test kit and test the pH, calcium hardness and alkalinity levels to see if they need to be adjusted.

Following the quick tips above will help your hot tub last longer and run more efficiently, which leads to more enjoyment
