Myths about swimming pools can often mislead and misinform. It’s important as both a pool owner and pool user to take a closer look at the myths and separate the fact from the fiction. Knowing the fact from the fiction can lead to a more enjoyable swimming experience, and eliminate any headaches that might arise from believing in a debatable statement. Before taking your next swim take a look at the list below to see what’s really true about swimming pools.

1. You Have to Wait At Least an Hour After Eating Before You Go Swimming

False – in most cases, children are told this to prevent cramps while swimming. If a swimmer cramps while in the pool it can lead to drowning. However, there is no evidence to support the claim that waiting after eating to swim prevents cramps. Cramps can happen anytime while swimming, not just after a meal. It is always a good idea to be aware of the surroundings and pool depth in case a cramp does occur.

2. Chlorine Will Dye Your Hair Green

False – a lesser known algae combatant, copper sulfate, can turn your hair green. The effects of this are much more noticeable to those with lighter colored hair. Prolonged exposure to chlorine can cause dry and brittle hair, as it acts as a drying agent.

3. Public Pools Have Dye in Them That Show When Urine Has Contacted the Water

False – there is simply no way for science to make this a reality at the current time. To keep swimming pools (especially public) safe and clean, make sure restrooms are used. Swimming pools are not bathrooms, and should not be treated as such.

4. Sunscreen Will Just Get Washed Off in the Pool, So it’s Not Really Needed

False – this one is especially wrong. Not only is this one incorrect, but water actually magnifies the UV ray power. The water acts as a sort of reflector as well, so normally unexposed areas become exposed. It is important to find a sun screen that is water proof. It is generally a good idea, even on cloudy days, to regularly apply sunscreen throughout the day.

5. People With Asthma Should Avoid Swimming

False – actually, swimming can be very beneficial to people that suffer from asthma. It offers a great way to exercise and strengthen cardio-respiratory function will also having fun.
